Highland Park Hurricanes
Welcome to the Highland Park (HP) Hurricane Swim Team! Being a part of the HP Swim Team is so much more than just swimming. It’s a way of life and it will form memories and skills that your child will carry into adulthood.
For two-and-a-half action packed months in the summer, your child will have the opportunity to be physically active, set and achieve goals, compete in swim meets, participate in pep rallies, cheer on their teammates, improve their times, establish long term friendships, and develop as an athlete and individual. Sound good so far? There’s more!
Swim team involves the WHOLE family. If you ask any parents of a swimmer what they like the most about getting involved in swim team, they will probably tell you about the atmosphere of community that they feel. Being a parent on the swim team is not a sit back affair. Swim team runs on parental involvement, and lots of it. It takes nearly 50 adults (not counting coaches) to pull off a successful swim meet. Families are asked to volunteer (a minimum of 5 times) throughout the season. The swim team relies on your support to ensure a successful swim season. Please say “YES” when asked to help. SWIMMING IS A FAMILY SPORT!
HP Swim Team Mission Statement
The HP Hurricane swim team is a volunteer run organization of the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) dedicated to the development of swimming and a love for the sport. We want to provide children with a safe and enjoyable swimming experience while advancing their aquatic skills. We will strive to foster teamwork and the following elements of good sportsmanship in all of our swimmers: personal growth, fairness, integrity, team spirit, dedication, and the ability to win and lose graciously. We believe it is the responsibility of adults in roles of leadership, volunteerism and spectatorship to model these same values.
We hope that the friendships, experiences and personal skills acquired through participation in the Highland Park Swim Team will help to carry our swimmers toward broader successes and happiness in life far beyond the swimming pool.
Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL)
The NVSL was founded in 1956 to sponsor competitive swimming and diving among community swimming pools in Northern Virginia and to develop in the children participating in this program a love for the sport, advanced aquatic skills, teamwork, and the principles of good sportsmanship.
The Division assignments will be announced in March. There are both competitive and developmental swim meets. The competitive or “A” meets are held Saturday mornings and the developmental or “B” meets are held Monday evenings. This year there will be five “A” meets. In addition to these meets NVSL also typically hosts specialty meets, like the relay carnival, all-star relays, IM Invitational and divisionals.

Swim Team Management
The Swim Team has Team Representatives who directly supervise the coaches and are the individuals responsible for the operation of the swim and dive teams including hiring coaches, scheduling competitive and developmental meets, coordinating parent volunteers, and assuring compliance with NVSL rules and regulations. The Team Rep are also the link between parents and team coaches. All questions and concerns regarding decisions and judgment of coaches and meet officials shall be directed to the Team Rep.
